MASON CITY — Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches and Panchero’s Mexican Grill are planning to open restaurants in Mason City.

City officials have approved a site plan and issued a building permit for a two-tenant building for them on the same lot as the building where Amish Heirloom’s furniture, Maggies Sewing Center, PSI Printing and Edward D Jones are located, according to City Planner Tricia Sandahl.

Mike Momberg is listed as the contractor.

The Globe Gazette first reported in June that Jimmy John’s would open a restaurant in Mason City.

A spokeswoman for Jimmy John’s, headquartered in Champaign, Ill., confirmed there will be a restaurant in Mason City but said it was too early to speculate on when it will open.

Panchero’s is a national chain headquartered in Coralville. No information was immediately available on a construction schedule or when it would open.

I am glad to see the new restaurants opening here BUT this is not a good location for them. This frontage road is always jammed up now and will be terrible with the traffic they will bring. Also, there will be little area for parking. Why there & why build new buildings when we have empty buildings everywhere, like the old Long John Silvers or Fazoli's or every shopping strip, for example.

you nailed it blue! jobs in any industry are a blessing and it's encouraging to see courageous people move forward with plans despite the crappy economy.

don't personally know the contractor but there are several houses in my neighborhood they built. based on that... these restaurants will be class acts.

So excited for the new restaurants. We need more jobs in Mason City also even if it is food service, it can always be a second job for someone. Great contractor doing the work, they should both be a beautiful restaurants for sure.

We sometimes eat restaurant food, but I love that more restaurants are opening for the times we do go out to eat.

Greater variety and the increasing number of economical restaurants is also a great thing for the many people that never prepare meals or even make a sandwich or microwave a frozen entrée.

There was a time when going out to eat was in itself an event, now many folks don’t cook at all.

I welcome these 2 restaurants and will make a point of dining there to give them a try.

nunnya, you need to stop believing everything you read on north iowa today. Don't believe corporate ever denied it. They avoided the question by giving a noncomital answer.

Will not go to Panchero's until they bring back the 'El Gordo' for my steak and pork with diablo sauce.

Probably one of the five terrible Subways.

Well, this tells us who is opening! What it does not say, is who will be forced to close. More and more resturants for the same or less people. Something has to give.
