MASON CITY — Mason City resident Bryan Odeen is putting his leg muscles to work to raise money for clean water.

Odeen, 25, is seeking pledges during December for Charity: Water, a non-profit organization bringing clean, safe drinking water to people in developing countries.

He will run one mile for every dollar donated, starting in January. His goal is to run 1,000 miles in 2013.

“It’s a fantastic group,” Odeen said. “One hundred percent of public donations go toward the mission of digging wells and providing clean water anywhere there’s a need.”

Currently the organization is raising money to dig 100 wells in Ethiopia, he said.

As a runner, Odeen said he drinks a lot of water.

“I have enjoyed the luxury of clean water all my life and now I’m finally going to try to make that a reality for someone else.”

His personal goal is to run a minimum of four or five miles at a time. He is working up to a half marathon and then a full marathon by the end of the summer.

When he’s not running, Odeen is music therapist with Iowa Hospice and media coordinator for Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls.
