HAMPTON - A Hampton couple died Friday night of gunshot wounds sustained in an apparent murder-suicide.
The Hampton Police Department and the Franklin County Sheriff's Department were called to the home of Gordon Woltjer, 36, and his 32-year-old wife, Angela DeVries-Woltjer, at about 6 p.m. Friday.
Preliminary findings indicate that Gordon Woltjer shot his wife and then turned the gun on himself, police say. Authorities declined to give details on the weapon or the wounds sustained by the victims.
Franklin County Medical Examiner Dr. Keith Hansen pronounced the victims dead at the scene.
Autopsies were conducted at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa Saturday. Capt. James Wobschall of the Hampton Police Department said the results were consistent with the conclusion that the shootings were a murder-suicide.
As for a motive, Wobschall said authorities did not know of one.
"We had not answered any domestic calls at the home," he said.
The couple's three children, 8-year-old Danyell, 5-year-old Miranda and 22-month old Blayne were in the home at the time of the shootings, Wobschall said. They were not injured.
Wobschall said a family friend called authorities Friday night to report a domestic "situation" at the Woltjer home.
The deaths remains under investigation by the Hampton Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
