MASON CITY | First United Methodist Church will be giving away 40,000 pounds of potatoes in Mason City Saturday.
Church members and volunteers said the potatoes are free of charge, and will be distributed in 10-pound bags. They anticipate they will be gone in a few hours.
Those interested can arrive at the church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., starting at 9 a.m.
Church members said this is the first year the church is donating potatoes. Local food banks and pantries have claimed some, but thousands of pounds are still available, church members said.
The event is a collaboration between the church and the Society of St. Andrew in Virginia, a group which seeks to feed America's hungry nationwide.
