MASON CITY | A Mason City man accused of shooting a woman Friday morning was formally charged Monday with first-degree murder. 

Larry D. Whaley, 60, appeared before Magistrate Judge Ronald Wagenaar via video conference Monday afternoon. 

He's accused of shooting Samantha Teeter, 19, in the head shortly before 4 a.m. Friday in an apartment building, 116 17th St. S.E.

Originally charged on Friday with attempted murder, Whaley was re-charged on Monday because Teeter died Sunday afternoon.

His bond was increased to $500,000. His preliminary hearing is Dec. 15.

Update: Murder charge filed after Mason City shooting victim's death

MASON CITY | A murder charge was filed Monday morning against a Mason City man accused of shooting a 19-year-old last week.

Larry D. Whaley, 60, was charged Monday morning with felony first-degree murder. 

He's accused of shooting Samantha Teeter, 19, in the head shortly before 4 a.m. Friday in an apartment building, 116 17th St. S.E.

Police arrested Whaley Friday on a charge of attempted murder. 

Teeter was taken off life support Sunday afternoon. 

The murder charge was filed as a result of her death.

Mason City woman, 19, dies of injuries from shooting

9 a.m. Update

MASON CITY | A Mason City woman severely injured in a shooting last week has died.

Family members say Samantha Teeter, 19, died Sunday afternoon after she was taken off life support in a hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Police say she was shot in the head shortly before 4 a.m. Friday in an apartment building at 116 17th St. S.E.

Teeter’s liver and kidneys were donated, per her wishes.

Her father, Dave Teeter, said donating his daughter's organs was one good thing that came from her death.

“It was a positive thing to focus on," Teeter, of Mason City, said Monday morning. "As sad and as miserable as we were this weekend, we know that there were going to be several families out there that were going to have the best weekend, the best Christmas, of their lives.”

Police say Samantha Teeter was shot by Larry Whaley, 60, with a handgun. 

Whaley, of Mason City, was charged Friday with felony attempted murder.

Police say additional charges are pending.
