NORTHWOOD | A man and woman from Kansas City, Missouri, were arrested for drugs and theft of a vehicle after a Worth County traffic stop Tuesday.

Allen Hakim Davis Jr., 28, and Shameka Shavae Wells, 26, were arrested by the Iowa State Patrol after being stopped at the northbound 202 mile marker on Interstate 35 about 11:48 p.m.

“The vehicle smelled of marijuana and when asked Shameka gave me a baggie of marijuana from her bra,” the trooper wrote in charging documents.

Upon further investigation, the vehicle was "found to be stolen," the trooper's criminal complaint said, which noted Davis Jr. had fraudulent registration, no insurance and no driver's license.

The trooper found drug paraphernalia in an ashtray and in the back seat. Court documents said Davis Jr. admitted to smoking marijuana within the last 30 minutes, failed field sobriety tests and submitted to breath testing, which indicated no presence of alcohol.

Davis Jr. was detained for operating while intoxicated while Wells was placed under arrest for possession of marijuana.

Upon transport to the Worth County Jail, Davis Jr. allegedly refused to provide a sample for testing, court documents said. The two were then turned over to the jail for processing.

According to court documents, Wells told officers the stolen vehicle belonged to her, then said she bought it for $700 and later said she received it as a gift.

Davis Jr. said since he was driving the car, he should be charged for theft, court documents said.

Davis Jr. was charged with felony first-degree theft and seven other misdemeanors:

  • Operating while intoxicated, first offense.
  • Possession of a controlled substance, marijuana - third offense.
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia.
  • No valid drivers license.
  • No insurance.
  • Fraudulent use of registration.
  • Speeding.

Wells was charged with felony first-degree theft and two other misdemeanors:

  • Possession of a controlled substance, marijuana.
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia.

Davis Jr. is being held on a $16,000 bond, and Wells is being held on an $11,000 bond. No court dates have been set.
