NORTHWOOD | A woman who told law enforcement a man assaulted her after she stopped to help him has recanted her story.

North Iowa law enforcement on Thursday circulated information that a man had staged a vehicle break-down and assaulted a woman who stopped to help him.

The Worth County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Friday the alleged assault — which had been reported Thursday afternoon on Wheelerwood Road, south of Diamond Jo Casino — had been recanted by the woman, who has not been identified.

"There is no active threat to the citizens of Worth County," the release said. "We would still urge citizens to call your local Sheriff’s Office if you find a stranded motorist."

The investigation is ongoing, Worth County Sheriff Dan Fank said Friday.

"(We) will make this determination after meeting with the county attorney, but charges are possible," Fank said via email Friday.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Iowa State Patrol provided assistance.
