MASON CITY | Mason City police say a Walmart scare shared on Facebook earlier this week was not criminal but the public should still be careful.
The Mason City Police Department said in a news release Thursday they have investigated an incident reported about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Walmart, 4151 Fourth St. S.W.
“The details of the incident, which have been widely shared via social media, were investigated by MCPD,” the department said in the release. “At this time, we do not believe that there was a criminal incident occurring.”
The women who reported the incident told police a group of men were following them in the store, the department said.
“It is important to understand that the women who reported this incident were paying attention to their surroundings and felt that something wasn’t right,” the release said. “They also sought help from store employees and were assisted in making sure they were safe when they departed from the store.”
Police said the two women were proactive about their safety, and encourage everyone to pay attention to their surroundings at all times.
Anyone with information about the incident should call Criminal Investigation Division Lt. Rich Jensen at 641-421-3636.
People who witness anything unusual or suspicious should call the police immediately and make a report.
Whenever possible, officers have a better opportunity to make a timely intervention when called to an incident when it is occurring, rather than after it has happened, the department said.
