MASON CITY | Mason City police are searching for a man who they say eluded officers Tuesday morning and abandoned a vehicle.
Police say officers attempted to stop a Volkswagen Passat about 6:18 a.m. Tuesday near 16th Street and South Federal Avenue.
The driver allegedly refused to stop, police said, increasing speeds as he headed north through Mason City.
“Police terminated the pursuit due to concerns over increasing speeds and motorists’ safety,” Capt. Mike McKelvey said Wednesday.
Officers later found the vehicle abandoned in the 1600 block of North Carolina Place.
“The driver apparently fled on foot eastbound,” McKelvey said. “Police followed the tracks in the snow until the suspect started traveling on sidewalks or streets, leaving no tracks, and avoided capture.”
The investigation is ongoing. Police have not identified the male driver but are looking for information on him and where he might be located.
Those with information should contact the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3636.
