MASON CITY | A Mason City man who was a key witness in the Larry Whaley second-degree murder trial will serve 10 days in jail for punching and strangling a woman in a basement.
Kalab Van Scyoc, 23, was 19-year-old Samantha Teeter's boyfriend at the time she was fatally shot by 61-year-old Larry Whaley. He testified that Teeter "cared for everybody" and gave "everyone the benefit of the doubt."
The Globe Gazette previously reported Scyoc punched a woman in the eye and grabbed her by the neck in a residence on the 900 block of North Madison Avenue at about 8 p.m. Dec. 4.
He was sentenced on Feb. 7, according to court documents.
