MASON CITY | A Mason City man is in custody for four counts of forgery involving fraudulent checks used at Mason City businesses in September.
Darrell Wayne Beresford, 48, presented checks at Tobacco Outlet, Younkers and Walgreens belonging to the bank account of a Mason City woman without her permission.
The woman reported her checks stolen.
On Sept. 20, about 4:30 p.m., Beresford allegedly presented a fraudulent check at Tobacco Outlet. Two days later, on Sept. 22, he attempted to purchase items with another fraudulent check and was turned down on the purchase because the attendant knew the victim, court documents said.
Beresford purchased merchandise from Younkers and Walgreens using an altered fraudulent check on Sept. 21.
A warrant for Beresford was served Tuesday and he was held in Cerro Gordo County Jail on $20,000 bond. He was released this week under supervision.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 22 in Cerro Gordo County District Court.
