MASON CITY | A Mason City man has been arrested on drug charges, possession of a firearm as a felon and theft after getting pulled over in a stolen property investigation.
Jose Santos Najera, 36, was pulled over about 10:25 p.m. Nov. 24 on the 200 block of Fourth Street Northeast by Cerro Gordo County deputies in relation to a stolen property investigation, court documents said.
Najera was allegedly operating a motor vehicle with a stolen license plate attached to the rear of the car. Court documents said Najera admitted to placing the stolen license plate on the rear of the vehicle.
He was arrested and the vehicle was towed
During vehicle inventory and probable cause search of his vehicle, a deputy located a loaded handgun in the console. Najera is a convicted felon and domestic abuser, court documents said.
Inside the vehicle, deputies found marijuana and a digital scale that was located in a draw string bag Najera was wearing when first stopped. Najera's ID was also in the bag. Alprazolam was in the console next to a loaded firearm.
He was charged with:
- Dominion/control of a firearm by a felon
- Possession of a controlled substance, marijuana - third or subsequent offense
- Possession of a controlled substance, alprazolam - third or subsequent offense
- Fifth degree theft
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
Najera posted bond Monday, according to court documents. A preliminary hearing hearing is set for Friday.
Najera was taken back into custody Wednesday on pending probation and parole violations and revocations in four prior cases. He is held for $8,000 total bond.
