GARNER | A Garner man has been charged with felony theft after reconnecting utility services Alliant Energy had disconnected for non-payment.
Dennis Michael Martin, 45, is charged with second-degree theft for incidents occurring on July 31, Aug. 30, Sept. 21 and Oct. 24.
On those dates, Alliant Energy employees went to a residence in the 1100 block of Seymour Avenue in Garner to shut off utilities. The company said the account for the property belonged to Martin, according to court records.
Martin continued to reconnect the utilities after Alliant shut them off, court documents said, and employees discovered a lock they had placed on the gas meter had been cut off, resuming service.
Alliant took possession of the gas meter Sept. 21, not allowing it to be turned back on, court documents said.
The total cost for Alliant's diversion service was more than $1,246, the company said in court documents. More than $352 in electric and more than $54 in gas had been used as of Oct. 24.
Martin was arrested Nov. 8 in Garner. He is being held in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
His preliminary hearing is Friday in Hancock County District Court.
