Cyndi Hanson, a western Iowa educator, explains why she is running against U.S. Rep. Steve King in next year's Republican primary.

MASON CITY |  Cyndi Hanson, a western Iowa educator, will challenge U.S. Rep. Steve King in next year's Republican primary.

She kicked off her campaign with an appearance Tuesday morning at Beanzy's coffee shop in Mason City.

Hanson is executive director of Northeast Community College's extended campus operation in South Sioux City. The college is in Norfolk, Nebraska.

She considers herself a Republican alternative to King, of Kiron, who best reflects Iowa's values.

Hanson says she is not seeking the congressional seat as a career but as a service to the people of Iowa.
