MASON CITY — A record 74 competitive teams are registered for the Globe Gazette’s 7th-annual Up In Smoke BBQ Bash, Friday and Saturday, July 23-24 in East Park.
Competitors are coming from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Dakotas, plus Georgia, Kansas, Missouri and Texas, to vie for over $14,000 in cash prizes.
Sixty-five teams competed last year.
It’s easy to see why the Bash continues to grow, said Globe Gazette Marketing Manager Ruth Miller.
“It’s the nice people of North Iowa — and the beauty and serenity of East Park plays a big part in it,” she said. “And our city deserves a lot of credit.”
More than 80 Kansas City Barbecue Society-certified judges will also be present.
“Ours has a reputation for having world-champion-quality competitors,” Miller said, “so people want to judge here.”
Up In Smoke also includes a variety of food vendors, a kids’ inflatable playground, the Hy-Vee Chili Cookoff and Chili Tasting (at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 23), and a beer garden.
Free entertainment includes classic doo-wop, rockabilly and rock ‘n roll by The Whitesidewalls at 7 p.m. Friday, and blues, blues rock, classic rock and country music by PV and the Phantoms at 2 p.m. Saturday.
