ALGONA | Algona Police have identified a deceased man found early Friday on Algona school property as Shane Lee Ballenger, 23, an Algona High School graduate and Marine.
His body was discovered at 1:20 a.m. Friday on the Algona High School/Middle School grounds, Police Chief Curtis Schipper reported.
Indications are that death was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police reported Friday afternoon. Kossuth County medical examiner investigator Mark Davis was summoned to the scene and pronounced Ballenger dead.
Final cause of death is yet to be determined pending results of an autopsy to be performed by pathologists at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Schipper reported.
Algona Superintendent Marty Fonley said Ballenger was a 2008 graduate of Algona High School.
"He was a nice kid, never in trouble," said Fonley, who was high school principal at the time. "It's very unfortunate."
He said Ballenger had enlisted in the Marines where he served for four years. He had apparently been honorably discharged from service recently.
The school system canceled classes Friday to facilitate the police investigation of the incident, Fonley said.
