CORRECTIONVILLE | The Woodbury County Sheriff's Office has identified the woman who died after her vehicle was struck by a school bus Tuesday afternoon.
Linda Zahnley, 68, of Correctionville died of injuries after her sport utility vehicle was rear-ended by a pickup truck in the southbound lane of State Highway 31 and pushed into the path of an oncoming River Valley school bus, which struck the SUV as it entered northbound lane of traffic, according to a press release.
The incident occurred near the intersection of Highway 31 and O'Brien Avenue shortly before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The release said Zahnley was stopped and waiting to turn east onto O'Brien Avenue when she was struck by the southbound pickup, driven by 54-year-old Clifton Cockburn, of Correctionville.
The bus, which did not have any children on board, was driven northbound by 57-year-old Renee Lundt, also of Correctionville.
Lundt was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Iowa State Patrol is conducting the technical investigation into the crash.
CORRECTIONVILLE | A woman has died after a school bus and a vehicle collided in rural Woodbury County Tuesday.
No students were inside the River Valley school bus at the time of the accident, which took place around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 31 and O'Brien Avenue near Little Sioux County Park, authorities said.
Authorities said a southbound SUV was waiting to turn east onto O'Brien Avenue and was rear ended by a pickup truck. The SUV was then thrown into the way of an oncoming school bus.
As a result of a collision, the bus ended up in the ditch, with the heavily damaged SUV on its side jammed into the bus. The woman driving the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities did not immediately identify the person killed in the crash. Capt. Tony Wingert of the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office confirmed the fatality and that no students were riding on the bus at the time of the accident.
The female driver of the school bus was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
A portion of Highway 31 was temporarily closed while the accident was being investigated by the sheriff's office and the Iowa State Patrol.
