GRUNDY CENTER | The St. Ansgar football team defeated the Grundy Center Spartans 42-21 on Friday in Grundy Center. With the victory, the Saints improved their season record to 6-0 and district record to 4-0.
The Saints found themselves trailing 21-7 late in the second quarter before scoring 35 unanswered points. The Spartans held a 21-14 lead at halftime.
St. Ansgar racked up 371 yards of offense while holding the Spartans to 285 yards. The Saints rushed for 350 yards and passed for 21 while limiting the Warriors to 183 yards rushing and 102 yards passing.
Offensively, the Saints were led by Josh Van Vliet, who rushed for 183 yards and one touchdown. The Saints also had productive rushing games from Dayton Smith with 73 yards and two touchdowns, Jack Sievert with 47 yards and one touchdown, and Collin Kramer with 49 yards and one touchdown.
Kramer completed one of two passes for 21 yards. Dayton Smith had the lone reception on the evening when he took a short screen pass and ran for a key first down on Saints' drive late in the second quarter.
Defensively, St. Ansgar was led by Smith, who registered 18 tackles to go along with a 70 yard interception that he returned for a touchdown midway through the third quarter. Smith’s interception gave the Saints a 28-21 lead. Noah Bishop and Preston Isler each had nine tackles in the game.
The Saints will host Newman Catholic on Friday in a key district contest. The Knights enter the game with a 4-2 record and this game will be key in determining the district race and playoff qualifiers. Game time is 7 p.m.
