LAKE MILLS – The odds were against the Saints, but they fought hard in their three-set loss to Lake Mills on Monday, 25-13, 25-16, 25-11.
Lake Mills managed to quickly assume control of the first and third sets, although St. Ansgar was able to hang around in set two until an 11-4 Lake Mills run late.
The Saints were led by three hitters with six kills each on offense: junior Jadyn Anderson, senior Kristen Hemann and freshman Kloster Blayne.
Anderson also led the team on defense, racking up 15 digs and two blocks, but three others would also rack up double-digit digs to counter the Bulldogs’ hitting game.
Freshman Hali Anderson finished with 14, junior Hannah Groth had 11 and junior Gabrielle Finberg finished with 10. Freshman Brooklyn Hackbart tallied the most total blocks with four.
Lake Mills defenders challenged nearly every attack the Saints could muster, limiting the team to 21 total kills and junior setter Tanyon Schutjer with 17 assists.
With the defeat, the Saints are out of the regional playoffs. Lake Mills went on to defeat Central Springs on Thursday to earn a spot in Tuesday’s regional final.
