STACYVILLE | A sign dedication program, for Julia Addington, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 401 N. Albion Street, Stacyville. Following the program, there will be a gathering at the Stacyville Public Library.
The sign will be located Addington once lived. Speakers for the event will be Cheryl Mullenbach and Kurt Meyer.
In 1869, Addington was elected the Superintendent of Mitchell County Schools. By winning this highly contested election, she became the first female, in the United States, to be elected to a public office.
In 2010, Addington received the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame award and in 2012, a flag was installed at her burial site in Stacyville.
The program, open to the public, is sponsored by the Mitchell County Historical Preservation Association.
