ST. ANSGAR | The Saints Legacy Fund received a $10,000 grant from the Fund for Enhancement of Mitchell County.

This grant was applied for in conjunction with the Saints Legacy Fund’s normal autumn cycle of grants and will be awarded to the Industrial Technology Department at St. Ansgar High School. They will use the $10,000 grant to purchase a Lincoln Virtual Welder.

The addition of this welding trainer will enable the IT department to add state of the art virtual reality training to the existing welding curriculum that will enhance the quality of training and the overall training capacity of the program.

Local companies that employ welders/maintenance technicians have reported a shortage of skilled welders. The demand for skilled welders is growing as one generation of workers retires and fewer young people seek industrial or manufacturing careers. The VRTEX will provide a safe introduction to welding and guide students to a high level of proficiency in the field.

In addition to the virtual welder, Saints Legacy Fund authorized a grant to the elementary school for purchase of FOSS science kits; to the middle school for all students to attend the movie “Wonder” and to the high school for standing desks.

The Saints Legacy Fund mission is to “enhance the learning experience in the St. Ansgar schools for children of all ages by investing in new areas of student learning and innovative programs.” Saints Legacy Fund assets are invested through the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. The next grant application cycle will take place in February 2018.
