OSAGE | American Legion Auxiliary Unit #278 and Orchard American Legion Auxiliary members will distribute the familiar red handcrafted poppies May 24-26 at Randy's Neighborhood Market.
Members of the Orchard Auxiliary will be at Randy's from 1-4 p.m. on Thursday.
Planned to coincide with Memorial Day, the annual event pays tribute to America’s war dead and those who still willingly serve their country. All proceeds from the distribution are invested in local programs that benefit veterans and their families.
Each nine-piece poppy is made by veterans by Auxiliary-sponsored Poppy Shops that supplement physical and psychological therapy needed by the veterans. The Auxiliary provides the materials to the veterans who make the poppy and the veteran is paid a small amount for each painstakingly-made flower. The Marshalltown Veterans Home supplies all the poppies for the local unit.
No matter what the cost of maintaining and supplying the Poppy Shops, the memorial poppy is never sold but given in exchange for a contribution.
