David R. Olson

David R. Olson, 70, Mason City, died Aug. 1, 2017, at the Muse Norris Hospice Unit of cancer.

His memorial service was held Aug. 7, 2017, at First Covenant Church in Mason City.

Dave was born Jan. 28, 1947 to Robert and Geraldine Olson in Osage, IA. He graduated from Osage High School in 1965. He was active in the football, basketball, and music programs.

Dave served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. He later enlisted in the Marine Corps.

Dave married Mary Jean Scharper on Nov. 6, 1982, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, IA. Dave and MJ served as Hall Directors at Waldorf College from 1985-87. Dave was also the golf coach then. Dave has also worked at Northwestern Cement Plant, Midwest Wholesale, Mercy Hospital and the N.I. Bus Company.

On June 30, 2005, Dave received the girt of a heart transplant. He was #559 a the U of M in Minneapolis. This gave him 12 extra years to watch his children grow to adulthood & meet his 3 adorable grandsons.

Dave has been a member of the River City Barbershop Chorus for 50+ years, Cub Master, Boy Scout leader, Merit Badge Counselor, active in the VFW, American Legion, Marine Corps League, Kiwanis and a member of First Covenant Church in Mason City.

Those thankful to share his life include his wife of 34 years, MaryJean, sons, Daniel (Valerie) Olson, Nicholas Olson, all of Mason City, Jaime Fuller. Grandsons: Noah, Elijah, and Jonah Olson. Sisters: Jane (Dave) Duchene, Waverly, IA, Rose (Al) Fredericks, Northwood, IA. Brothers: Richard (Cheryl) Olson, Albuquerque, NM, Ronald (Linda) Olson, Kasson, MN; numerous nieces and nephews; mother-in-law: Mrs. William Scharper, Osage, IA; brother-in-law: Kevin (Jill) Scharper, Mason City, IA.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, sister Peggy, and his father-in-law, William Scharper.
