“I love seeing the capabilities of the students, and seeing them achieve after working so hard day in and day out,” said Whitney Clark, the new fifth through sixth grade special education teacher at Osage Middle School.
Clark grew up in Osage, and is an alumnus of Osage High School. She started at Hawkeye Community College, and then transferred to University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Elementary education and a minor in special education. Teaching had always been in the back of Clark’s mind, and in the end, it is what she decided to pursue. Clark has always enjoyed working with kids and helping them grow in different ways. She also mentioned that a piece she remembers most from school was the dress up days and celebrations. This is another perk that has drawn Clark to the teaching field. “What other job allows you to dress up and have fun celebrations several times a year?” Another large component she loves about her job is the schedule and how it balances with being a mother of two.
Previously, Clark had a position as a special education teacher in Charles City, teaching kindergarten through third grade. She was drawn back to Osage because of her love of the community, and to be able to easily enroll her two children at Osage in the future.
Clark has had a very pleasant experience at Osage, but she mentioned it is a challenge to getting everyone on board with the new trends and teaching styles. Another challenge, at first, was being co-workers with her former teachers. “It was weird at first, but it was very easy to overcome,” said Clark.
“I believe all kids can make progress,” Clark said. Clark believes that every student, no matter his or her abilities will make improvement throughout the year. She also said that with helping the students grow, she grows as a person every day. Clark’s philosophy is that it is very important to maintain positive energy, to keep the kids excited to learn new things and be open to new ideas.
In my opinion, it is cool that Mrs. Clark chose to return back to her hometown. I believe that says something about our community. Welcome to the Osage Community School District.
