The Mitchell County Board of Supervisors heard an update from the healthy harvest program and a request for $3,100 in support for the program.
Supervisors told representatives that it will take 3-4 weeks before department budgets are completed. They will examine funding requests at that time.
In the last year, the program has been granted its own 501(c)3 status and continued its mission to lead and sustain a regional mobile food system to improve the health of the citizens of the counties they serve.
“We don’t have a brick-and-mortar place for people to come find us,” said Jan Libby, a representative for Healthy Harvest. “We work from our homes to help promote local food growing and more farm-to-table practices.”
Libbey said Healthy Harvest will host a local food conference Feb. 24 in Clear Lake. Healthy Harvest also provides technical support to producers, among other services.
“We received a grant which gives us the opportunity to expand our approach and workshops between the producers and restaurants,” said Libbey. “In addition, we’ll be able to continue to support local food growing, and help support farmers markets and spreading more information on them."
It also held a farm-to-fork dinner in August in Osage. Starting small, with 35 attendees at that event, Healthy Harvest is looking to plan another one, and is considering a combination of a farm tour/farm-to-table event.
“Lots of work has been focused on fruit and vegetable producers,” said Libbey, “but we also realize there is a need from meat producers. We got a small grant to do a meet-and-greet between meat producers and businesses to make those connections.”
Healthy Harvest has also started some farm-to-school planning in an effort to get more fresh fruits and vegetables to students.
