Shop on State

State on State is located in the former Washington School in Osage.

OSAGE | On Saturday, Oct. 21, approximately 40 people met at the Osage Public Library to begin discussing what could be done to keep the non-profit store, Shop on State, in Osage for Mitchell County.

Earlier in October, the Shop on State Board of Directors announced several reasons for the closure including the need for more volunteers to work at the store, the store's lease expiring on Oct. 31 with no new location found, the retirement of the current manager with no replacement found as well as the for the store to downsize and relocate to a smaller store.

Following the announcement, local residents Laura Wynohrad and Ellen Witt, said they both felt something needed to be done to keep the store going for the county due to the positive outcomes Shop on State has provided over the years.

“It goes without saying this is a win-win for everyone involved – customers, donors, grant recipients, even the volunteers have benefited from having Shop on State in their lives,” Wynohrad said.

At the meeting, four committees were formed - building committee, partners committee, retail/volunteer committee and a non-profit committee.

“There are lots of details to work through before we could make any sort of announcement as the future of Shop on State,” Wynohrad said. “But we are encouraged there are many people willing to help with the process.

“If one of these areas interests someone, please let either Ellen Witt or me know. We know there were many people who wanted to be there on Saturday but could not attend. There is much work to be done and it will take the entire village.”
