Things are about to get “greener” at Osage High School. The FFA program, run by Malayne Meyer, is looking to expand by getting a greenhouse. The greenhouse will primarily be used to assist the horticulture class in their education. According to Meyer, “I think we will be able to do a lot more projects that we want to do in class.” Having this new addition will allow FFA students to grow plants indoors for a longer period of time.
However, this is not a new idea. The idea of getting a greenhouse has been tossed around for a couple years. It wasn’t until this year that action is being taken though. A design has not been decided on quite yet; Meyer is open to all ideas. The program plans on taking some time to investigate and tour other school greenhouses in the area. Some of the schools in mind are New Hampton and Cresco. This way some advice can be given on what works well and what does not when it comes to starting and running a successful greenhouse.
Once a greenhouse is found, it is planned to be put up right next to the Agricultural shop which is located on the south side of the building. Working with the school board has been very important during this process to make sure everything works out with all the improvements the school is planning on making. It is hoped to be up and running by next year.
