For the past few weeks a giant paper banner has circled our worship center in our church. On it we invited our church to write down their prayer requests to God. And honestly, it’s been a really humbling experience.

Over 350 prayers have been written by men, women, and children. Some ask for healing for a specific illness. There are prayers for God to grant first pregnancies. Several pray for reconciliation between family members. Others are simply asking for help with an upcoming test. Then there are the many prayer requests asking for individuals to place their faith in Jesus for a first time.

If you were to write a prayer request on our wall, what would it say? Have you been burdened by an ongoing sickness, or are you in a situation where you realize that you need God’s help? Maybe you’re hesitant to pray or ask others to pray for you because you’ve been disappointed in the past, or you’re not so sure that God even cares.

After all, God can seem so far away sometimes. But then I remember Jesus. The beauty of Jesus is that he is God with us. He didn’t stay aloof on a distant cloud in heaven. He walked our dusty roads. He looked into our anxiety filled and fearful eyes. He loved us so much that he gave his life in our place.

Through belief in Christ, our prayers are not messages in a bottle eternally floating on an endless, empty sea. God our Father hears us! So today I challenge you: Pray! Even if it’s just for a few moments. Even if you don’t know the flowery words. Pray.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 1 John 5:14
