As Mayor of Forest City, I would like to thank and congratulate the following Councilmembers for being elected to serve the citizens of Forest City, beginning January 1, 2018:
* Ron Holland, Ward I
* Tony Mikes, At-Large
* Dennis Zehren, At-Large
* Win Pehrson, Ward III
I’d like to thank Councilmember Jon West for serving 10 years as Ward III Councilmember. Jon always attended meetings and freely expressed his views and expertise as issues arose. Jon chose to not run for re-election, and we wish him well as he respectfully leaves the Council to pursue other interests.
We are very fortunate to have very qualified people on our City Council, who are responsible for attending council meetings, community meetings, budget workshops and many special events. These individuals all bring with them a history of business success, management skills, financial expertise and, most importantly, common sense.
I hope everyone had a fun and safe Halloween. The Forest City Police Department hosted their annual Halloween celebration and served several hundred hot dogs to Trick or Treaters. All food and service were donated and we thank all those who contributed. This was a significant effort for public relations.
The Forest City Fire Department recently held their annual Soup Supper Fundraiser. Eleven hundred people enjoyed a variety of soups, fresh bread and desserts, with oyster stew and chili being the most popular. Proceeds from this event are used for necessary equipment.
The Forest City Community Schools hosted an excellent Veteran’s Day program. Thank you to Darwin Lehmann and American Legion Commander Dennis Zehren for helping make this event possible. A special thanks to the many who served and continue serving our fair country.
Let’s keep these good, positive things coming. In the light of all the tragedy that has happened, we want to lift each other up and show each other the respect and kindness we deserve. A recent article we received from Mark Tomb of the Iowa League of Cities’ listed the following expectations that are important life lessons. I’d like to leave you with his words of wisdom…
* Listen attentively.
* Respect the opinions of others.
* Keep an open mind.
* Give constructive comments, suggestions and feedback.
* Avoid personal attacks.
* Remember the things we have in common.
Value people, the process, and the results.
