On the morning of Wednesday, August 23, the buses will roll and we will welcome about 1,200 students to the 2017-2018 academic year.
This is an exciting time not only for students and parents, but also for our staff. I wish to extend a special Forest City welcome to new students, families and staff. New high school teaching staff include Trey MacTaggart, PE/Study Skills, and Anna Tschida, Language Arts. Dave Chapin, custodian, and Amber Plath, nurse, also join our FCCSD family.
With the start of school approaching, please watch for information in the mail the first week of August regarding how to register your child(ren) for school.
This year, we are introducing online registration and payment. We hope this will become a more effective and efficient process for parents/guardians and our staff alike.
You will also receive information on back to school conferences and an overview about how you can keep up-to-date on school-related events and activities.
I’m excited to share that our district now has one centralized calendar of events. You may not have realized it, but we were trying to maintain several calendars for the school year schedule, activities and athletics.
This new calendar is always viewable on www.forestcity.k12.ia.us, a mobile app (search for R School Activity Scheduler), and you can also download the events to your personal calendar.
We will continue to use the application, SchoolWay, to communicate weather-related notifications and other announcements. More information on the calendar and SchoolWay is included in the registration information.
There are many reasons to be proud of Forest City Community Schools. Our 2017 juniors and seniors earned 1,010 college credits, made possible by the district’s partnership with Waldorf University and NIACC.
The seniors also earned $325,000 in scholarships via the Forest City Education Foundation.
We now offer STEM programs at the elementary, middle school, and high school. The elementary staff have been studying and are implementing a new language arts curriculum.
This year’s groundbreaking ceremony for the new Hanson Family Fine Arts Center was especially exciting. The construction of this new state-of-the-art-facility is expected to be completed by the fall of 2018.
Best wishes to all students, parents and employees for a productive school year filled with many excellent opportunities.
I also extend sincere thanks to the district’s many volunteers and community partners. Working together, we will continue to inspire success and a lifetime of learning.
