FOREST CITY — The Family Alliance for Veteran's of America is sponsoring a program about paper dolls from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, 100 N. Clark St., Forest City.
The event is part of the activities during the fireman's convention being hosted in Forest City during that weekend.
Barb Ruiter will show off a collection of paper dolls that spans 102 years. There are the Letti Lane paper dolls from Ladies Home Journal magazine, Dolly Dingle paper dolls from Pictorial Review magazine and Betsy McCall from McCall’s magazine.
Other sets in the collection include Dione Quintuplets, Shirley Temple, the Presidents, baby paper dolls, teenagers and adults, actors and actresses, baseball players, Barbie doll paper dolls, the British Royal family, TV Moms, television stars and Military paper dolls.
The cost is a roll of paper towels, a box of Kleenex, a four roll pack of toilet paper or other paper product and a free will offering.
"Why the paper product?" she said. "Because if our homeless Veterans have food stamps they cannot buy paper products with them. None of our grants include paper products. So, we must rely on donations to provide these products.
"I bought $144 worth of toilet tissue in January, as a donation, but the staff cannot keep buying everything we need for our Homeless Veterans because we wouldn’t be able to make our own living. But we are all very generous here and help out when we can."
