FOREST CITY — The Forest City boys track team had strong performances by sprinters and field event participants in the 2016 Umstead Relays Tuesday in Eagle Grove. The Indians accumulated 60 points, tying for fourth place with Fort Dodge in the nine-team event.

Algona edged Humboldt for first place 119 to 118. Clear Lake was third with 70 points.

Three Indian relay teams placed, counting 19 points, while in the Individual events the Indian sprinters scored 21 points and the team scored 17 points in field events.

“We saw a lot of things that we were hoping to see,” said Brian Hovenga. “I was pleased.”

Hovenga said the temperature was cold and his team stepped up. “They were complaining on the bus on the way to Eagle Grove,” said the second year head coach. “But once we got there is was all business.”

The teams’ 1600 meter medley relay team brought home the team’s only first place finish. Team members were Richard Gildemeister Tyler Anderson, Timmy Thompson and Grady Hovenga.

Thompson placed second in the 100 meter dash while Gildemeister was second in the 400 meter dash.

Zach Lehmann placed second in the 800 meter run, which was won by Garner-Hayfield-Ventura’s Johnny O’Connor.

Mitch Lambert tied for third place in the 110 meter hurdles while Forest City runners Noah Segerstrom and Ryan Theel were just off the scoring pace coming in at seventh and eight places respectively in the 1600 meter run.

Colton Shipman finished third in the shot put while Chris Jermela was fifth in the discus. Kyle Brown was just off the top finishers, placing seventh in both the shot put and discus.

Ryan Saari and Lambert tied for fifth in the high jump. Brandon Finch placed sixth in the long jump.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Segerstrom, Finch, Lehmann and Grady Hovenga finished second while the 4x200 meter relay finished sixth.

On Friday the Forest City boys will host a meet at Waldorf University.
