Dance instructors Margaret Majerczyk, Amy McNace, Gary and Sherri Warner will host ’50s style dance lessons including the British Stroll, Surf Strut and Boogie Surf Style. The last half hour will feature couples Jive Dance.

Rockin’ The Art of the ’50s and ’60s: 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., MacNider Art Museum, 303 Second St. S.E., Mason City

What was going on in the art world while Buddy Holly and friends were tearing up the music world? Head to the MacNider Museum for a free guided tour of the art of the ’50s and ’60s and see what Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and puppeteer Bil Baird were creating, along with female artists Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler.

Free, open to general public.

“The Twilight of the ’50s: Four Months At The Surf Ballroom in 1958-1959” Lecture, 10:30 a.m., Clear Lake Public Library, 200 N. Fourth St.

This presentation by Jonas Westover will examine some of the performances at the Surf Ballroom between November 1958 and February 1959, demonstrating the wide range of music that could be heard at this historical venue. National groups stopped, but there were many other musicians (mostly regional) whose music was featured, including the popular Jules Herman and Leo Greco and his Pioneers.

Donations to the Surf Ballroom History Project accepted, open to general public.

“The Big Bang! The Birth of Rock and Roll” Symposium, 10 a.m., E.B. Stillman Auditorium, 1601 Third Ave. N.

In the early 1950s, a new form of music exploded onto the scene, exciting the growing teenage audience while startling many others who preferred the music of Bing Crosby and Patti Page. Popularized by disc jockey Alan Freed in 1951, the term “rock and roll” came to describe a new form of music, steeped in the blues, rhythm and blues, country and gospel. Symposium presented by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame staff of Cleveland, Ohio.

Admission, $5 for the public, free for VIP ticketholders.

KRIB Record Hop, Noon-3 p.m., Surf Ballroom Lounge

KRIB Radio, Mason City, will return to its ’50s format in conjunction with the Winter Dance Party, with KRIB DJs spinning all of your favorites.

Memorial Site Tour, 2 p.m. Motorcoach departs from Surf Ballroom Lobby

Escorted motorcoach tour to the farm field north of Clear Lake where the ill-fated airplane came to rest. Tour length: 75-90 minutes. Video presentation en route to memorial site is included. Visitors are encouraged to dress in warm layers-a 1/4 mile walk is required to see the memorial site.

“The Buddy Holly Story” — 35th Anniversary screening with special guest appearance by Gary Busey, 3:30 p.m., Lake Theater, 2 N. Fourth St.

Film portrays the life of 1950s rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Buddy Holly, starring Gary Busey, who was nominated in 1978 for a Best Actor Oscar. A special hors d’oeuvres reception will immediately follow the film at the Clear Lake Arts Center, 17 South Fourth St.

Tickets: $30 per person; free admission for VIP ticketholders. Advance reservations only.
