Mohawk Follies

Mason City High School students rehearse for Mohawk Follies on in February 2017.

MASON CITY — The 69th annual edition of The Follies opens tonight.

The show, presented by the Mason City High School Vocal Music Department, will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9, 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, in the North Iowa Community Auditorium at NIACC.

Tickets, available in advance from Mason City Hy-Vee stores and Mason City High School main office, are $7 for senior citizens/children under 12 and $9 for adults. Tickets are $8 and $10 at the door. Advance purchasing is encouraged as all performances traditionally sell out.

This year’s theme is “Hooray For Hollywood,” a salute to some of the greatest music in film.

Selections include hit songs such as “Just Go To The Movies,” “Footloose,” and a medley from the blockbuster movie “High School Musical.”

The production features a variety of ensembles and acts, including three show choirs, two instrumental ensembles, dancers, vocalists and comedy skits. More than 225 students are involved.

“Hundreds of hours go into preparing this show, with rehearsals beginning in October," said Joel Everist, director of choral activities for Mason City Community Schools.

All of the small ensemble and solo acts are prepared, auditioned and staged by the students, and students run all of the technical aspects of the show, according to Everist.
