MASON CITY — Downtown Mason City is the place to be this weekend, starting with the annual Ethnic Luncheon on Friday.

The weekend also includes Main Street Mason City’s last Friday Night Live of the season, and re-enactments of the Dillinger robbery.

The 13th annual Ethnic Lunch, sponsored by the North Iowa Diversity Appreciation Team, will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Federal Avenue on the east side of Central Park. The event includes cultural exhibits, ethnic food, genealogy and diversity awards.

The menu includes Mexican specialty tacos, enchiladas and burritos from Mr. Taco; Mexican beef tacos, taco salad and fried ice cream sundaes from the Knights of Columbus; and German brats, runzas, apple dumplings, hot potato salad and baked goods by Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Filipino offerings from April Concepcion include egg rolls, rice noodles, fried rice and meat on a stick. Trinity Lutheran Church will serve Norwegian meatballs and kringla, and St. John’s Episcopal Church will have English bangers and mash, scones and hot tea.

Sangita Jalukar will serve Indian bhel-chat, Ruth Willier will have ethnic desserts, Suzie Q will sell Greek gyros, Philly steak and cheese, and the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa will sell pop and water.

Friday Night Live begins at 6 p.m. featuring music by the Chocolate Crackers on stage on Federal Avenue.

The event runs until 10 p.m., with inflatables and obstacle course, craft and food vendors, beverage garden and more.

The Great River City Festival returns Saturday, Sept. 17, with re-enactments of the Dillinger Gang’s robbery of the First National Bank (now City Center) by the Public Enemies of 1934 and local volunteers. Re-enactments will be at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. in front of the City Center Building downtown Mason City.

There will also be vintage and antique cars on display, root beer floats, Imagination Playground, a photo booth and prize giveaways in Central Park.
