MASON CITY — The North Iowa Choral Society will present its Christmas concert, “Christmas Fantasies,” at 3 p.m. Sunday in the North Iowa Community Auditorium.

General admission tickets are $5, available from Choral Society members or by calling 641-420-6472. Tickets also will be available at the door.

Special guests include pianist Rachel Everist, trumpeter Casey Grove, flautist Maria Meyer and the newly-formed North Iowa Choral Society’s Children’s Choir.

The addition of a children’s choir is the brainchild of the Choral Society’s new director, Linda Ferjak.

“As a lifelong music educator I feel it is important to provide opportunities for young musicians to develop and share their talents,” Ferjak said. “This concert’s Children’s Choir is just the first step in developing various branches of the North Iowa Choral Society.”

Choral Society members Casey Grove and Peggy Hamilton helped organize and rehearse the Children’s Choir.

The Choral Society will perform Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker Suite.” Originally a ballet, this version gives it lyrics. It includes Overture, Dance of the Sugar Plums, Trepak, Dance of the Toy Flutes and Waltz of the Flowers, and features a four-hand piano accompaniment by Rachel Everist and Teresa Lursen.

Everist will also be performing piano solos. The Rev. Sid Bohls is the concert narrator.

Other selections include “Lux Arumque,” “The Road Home” with soloist E. Howard Sonksen, “Pat-a-Pan” with flute; “In Silent Night,” “True Light” with soloist Robert Beery III; “Peace, Peace” with flute and children’s choir; and “Christmas Choral Fantasy” with soloist Peggy Hamilton, trumpet, and children’s choir.

The children’s choir will also perform “Winter Fantasy” and “When I Kneel at the Manger Tonight.”

“Our featured instrumentalists and newly formed children’s choir add a special flavor to the program that our audience is sure to enjoy and lead them into the most blessed of holiday seasons,” said Julie Taylor, Choral Society president.
