MASON CITY | Police are seeking information related to a shooting Saturday night in Mason City.

About 4:50 p.m. Sunday, officers located a vehicle that may have been involved in a shooting that occurred in the 200 block of 12th Street Southeast, police said in a press release.

A CodeRED warning, which was later canceled, was issued Sunday for the area surrounding the 600 block of South Carolina Avenue. Officers believed that a suspect from the shooting was located inside of a residence there.

The CodeRED system allows police to send a phone message to targeted areas of the community via phone messages. It is used locally by Mason City police, Clear Lake police and the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff's Office.

The system gets phone numbers from county data and public records.

People also can sign up online or download the app to receive alerts.

“Because the investigation involved the use of firearms, officers took appropriate precautions to notify neighbors of the potential public safety risk,” the release said. “The occupants of a residence in the 600 block of South Carolina Avenue were evacuated from their location.”

The North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force Special Operations Group was called to assist Mason City police in securing the residence.

One additional person left the residence after communicating with police, who were outside.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The Mason City Police Department executed a search warrant for the vehicle and the residence. The incident remains under investigation.

Saturday shooting

The man shot Saturday evening sought help from neighbors across the street after the victim came to their house, according to a witness.

Mason City Police Chief Jeff Brinkley said later Saturday night that there was no threat to the public, but he declined to release information about the suspect.

Mason City Police responded to the call at 6:47 p.m. on the 200 block of 12th Street Southeast.

Jeff Beebe, a neighbor across the street from where the shooting took place, said the victim was shot in a home and then crossed 12th shirtless to another neighbor's home. Those residents then called 911.

Police said the victim suffered a single gunshot wound "to his upper body." He was transported to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa by fire medics. They characterized his injuries as non-life threatening.

Police and detectives were at the scene, searching sidewalks and walking through the second level of a home. They also looked into vehicles with flashlights.

Brinkley said officials believe "the incident is contained to the household." Officials were waiting for a judge to sign a warrant before executing a search of the house.

Beebe works the third shift and was trying to sleep when lights filled the neighborhood.

When asked if he heard any gunfire, he said, "Lights woke me up before anything else."

The 12th Street was also taped off between South Pennsylvania and South Georgia.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Lt. Rich Jensen at the Mason City Police Department at 641-421-3636.

Mason City woman 'in desperate need of assistance' turns to Cheer Fund (with donations from Dec. 11)

A Mason City woman whose husband was in a car crash this summer is asking the Christmas Cheer Fund for assistance over the holidays.

The woman, 50, said because of the crash that “almost took his life,” her husband hasn’t been able to return to work.

“We are in desperate need of assistance,” she wrote in her Cheer Fund application.

According to the application, there are nine people residing at the Mason City home, including five full-time and part-time dependent children between 1 and 17 years old.

The applicant said she and her husband take care of their nephew the past three years and their three grandchildren “whom I nor their mother has money for gifts for them.”

Their grandchildren are unable to receive gifts from Toys for Tots because their mother is attending school and working, the application said.

“I need to give for kids and maybe something for husband and daughter who lives with me and son-in-law,” she wrote.

The woman, whose family hasn’t applied for funding within the past three years, said if awarded Christmas Cheer Fund assistance, it would be used for Christmas presents, dinner and clothing.

Since the Cheer Fund began in 1927, more than $3 million has been raised.

This year’s goal is $125,000.

The Christmas Cheer Fund was established by Globe Gazette Publisher Lee Loomis in 1927 so every child could have a present on Christmas morning. In the years since it has come to mean a little help at Christmastime to people of all ages.

Donations may be dropped off or mailed to the Globe Gazette office, 300 N. Washington Ave., Mason City, IA 50402-0271.

Any remaining funds not distributed for the holidays will be given to local nonprofits. The Christmas Cheer Fund balance will return to $100 in January to maintain the checking account.

Those in need can apply for help from the Cheer Fund at the Globe Gazette between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Applicants must use the 2017 request form. Applications will close at noon Dec. 21.

Cheer Fund donations: Monday, Dec. 11
