2/8 WEATHER TIP OF THE DAY FROM METEOROLOGIST TYLER RONEY
 02.07.16

Iowa is a unique place to live because of the weather, but what are some other top places across the country to observe weather? In Upstate New York, it's a magnet for low pressure systems. Many low pressure systems that develop in the United States eventually find their way here. Strong mid-latitude cyclones influence the weather through a large portion of the year. The winter storms can be incredible. This location is far enough inland that Nor'easters and strong mid-latitude cyclones will often bring significant snow events. The position of Lake Ontario can bring massive lake-effect snow events.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is taking a day off from the “Let’s Move” campaign while enjoying the Super Bowl.

The campaign, led by First Lady Michelle Obama, is focused on curbing obesity, but she admits that the first family takes “Let’s Move” off the table for the big game.

President Barack Obama says the Obamas will watch the game with a regular group of friends. The president says they’ll eat wings, pizza and nachos. He says there’s also a vegetable tray “that nobody touches.”

Clinton: Flint crisis ‘immoral’

FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Taking a detour from New Hampshire’s campaign trail, Hillary Clinton said Sunday that a water crisis in a Michigan city was “immoral” and demanded that Congress approve $200 million in emergency aid to address the community’s battle with lead-contaminated water.

The Democratic presidential hopeful made a quick visit to Flint, an unusual stop for a candidate trailing in polls against rival Bernie Sanders in the first primary state.

Divers search for collided planes

LOS ANGELES (TNS) — Dive teams are continuing recovery efforts off the Los Angeles coast but so far have found no further debris linked to the suspected midair collision of two small planes Friday, officials said.

Underwater cameras and divers were in waters off the Los Angeles Harbor on Sunday in an ongoing effort to locate wreckage and the remains of at least two people and possibly a third who are missing and presumed dead, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Aura Sierra.

New England to get storm brunt

BOSTON (AP) — Forecasters say parts of New England could get the brunt of a snowstorm that’s heading for the east coast.

The National Weather Service on Sunday issued a blizzard warning for southeast Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the islands. Up to 18 inches of snow could fall from Monday morning through the evening. Whiteout conditions and 40 mph winds are expected.

Texas teen kills mom, neighbors

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — A 19-year-old killed his mother and two neighbors before turning his gun on himself in a shooting that brought SWAT and various emergency vehicles to a rural area in Texas, authorities said Sunday.

Uvalde County Sheriff Charlie Mendeke said investigators haven’t determined a clear motive for the shootings. The shooter, Dylan Westerburg lived with his mother in a small cabin about 20 yards from a mobile home where the neighbors were shot.

Polish leader pulls the strings

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — When Hungary’s prime minister had a secret five-hour meeting in a secluded mountain resort with the most powerful person in Poland, he didn’t convene with his counterpart or the Polish president.

Instead he spoke with Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the leader of Poland’s ruling party, a man who has no official government position.

The mysterious meeting recently in a guest house on Poland’s southern border enhanced the perception that Kaczynski, rather than Prime Minister Beata Szydlo or President Andrzej Duda, is the main decision-maker in Poland today, and that, like Hungarian leader Viktor Orban, he might steer his nation down an anti-democratic path.
