When selecting a new dog to bring home, soon-to-be owners must consider some important questions: Will the dog be high maintenance? How much exercise will it need? And possibly most important, how long will it live? Larger breeds like the Bernese mountain dog and the Irish wolfhound have average life expectancies of eight years, while smaller breeds like the rat terrier can live more than two decades.

With that in mind, PetBreeds, a pet research site by Graphiq, found the longest-living dog breeds. Only purebreds recognized by the American Kennel Club were included in the ranking. The pups are ordered by average life expectancy and when ties occur, the breeds are ranked by maximum life expectancy and by alphabetical order.

From the toy poodle to the beagle, these purebreds will love and adore you for nearly a quarter century.
