Joshua Davis, author of "Spare Parts," the 2017 NIACC Common Read, will be at the North Iowa Community Auditorium at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, part of the Performing Arts and Leadership Series.

In 2004, four teens attend a national underwater robotics championship in California. Born in Mexico, they grew up in Phoenix, where they lived in fear of deportation. Their high school, hundreds of miles from the ocean with more than 80 percent of its students below the poverty line, was the last place you’d expect to find kids building an underwater robot.

Co-founder of Epic Magazine and Epic Digital, Davis' memoir, “The Underdog” (2015) details his journey through some of the world’s most outlandish competitions.
