Heartland Museum in Clarion has received an Garland Cutter from Lowell Hill of Urbana, Illinois.
It originally was purchased by J. B. Carpenter of Woolstock. A prized possession of his wife, Susan, it was forgotten after her death in an auto accident in 1923. Her granddaughter, Betty, begged that it move with her father to Stonega, and then Rowan. Betty married Lowell Hill, and the couple restored it.
Garland Buggy Company (1898 to 1901) was from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Hill is seeking a brass plate of the Garland Buggy Company on any kind of vehicle; Garland brass plate on a cutter or sleigh; dated Garland catalog of cutters and sleighs; a replica of the Carpenter's cutter; proof of when J.B. and Susan acquired the cutter. He is offering rewards for anyone who finds these items and can provide proof to the museum. For information, call 515-602-6000.
