West Hancock was one of the best teams in Class 1A all season, and last week, the state took notice by naming freshman Rachel Leerar and sophomore Amanda Chizek to all-state teams.
Leerar was a second-team selection by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association and a second-team selection by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. Chizek made the third team of the IPSWA's all-state teams.
Leerar led the Eagles to a Class 1A regional final, leading the team with a 48.8 field goal percentage for 478 points. Leerar averaged 19.7 points per game and posted a team-high of 88 steals.
Chizek was the second player from West Hancock to earn all-state honors as she was selected to the third team. Chizek was the Eagles’ second-leading scorer behind Leerar, shooting 61.9 percent from the field for 289 points this season. The 6-foot sophomore used her height to her advantage, adding a team-high 73 blocks on defense, and she averaged 11 rebounds per game.
