With so much gone from last year's state quarterfinal team, getting up to speed this football season may take some time for West Hancock.

The Eagles kicked off their season last Friday with a 40-0 loss at Hancock County rival Garner-Hayfield-Ventura.

From the start, the Eagles were playing catch-up. The Cardinals jumped to a 21-0 lead at halftime, and added 19 more in to second half to complete the shutout.

West Hancock junior Bennett Bruns led the Eagles' ground attack with 67 yards on 11 carries. Tate Hagen added 50 yards on 12 carries, and MaCoy Yeakel finished with 15 rushing yards and 23 receiving yards.

Quarterback Chase Eisenman passed for 37 yards and threw one interception.

Defensively, Yeakel had a team-high 5 1/2 tackles while Tate Hagen and Caleb Eckels added 4 1/2 apiece. Zach Clark and Josef Smith each recorded a sack.

West Hancock (0-1) opens the home portion of its schedule on Friday when it plays host to Belmond-Klemme.
