When you're chasing down a conference title, every win is important, but even more so when the team you're facing is right near the top with you.

The West Hancock girls basketball team earned an important 52-38 win over Forest City to remain one game back of North Union in the Top of Iowa Conference West Division standings.

It was a six-point game at halftime before West Hancock used a strong third quarter to build its lead to double digits heading to the final quarter.

"We really got after it in the third quarter," said West Hancock coach Paul Sonius.

Freshman Rachel Leerar led the way with 19 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Amanda Chizek added another double-double to her growing number this year with 17 points and 20 rebounds.

Senior Kelly Leerar added six points and seven assists, and Mahayla Faust and Riley Hiscocks scored three points apiece.

On Tuesday, Jan. 30, West Hancock rolled to an easy 73-35 win over North Iowa.

Rachel Leerar poured in a game-high 25 points and added four assists and four steals, and Chizek added 12 points and 10 rebounds to finish with another double-double.

Additionally, Maddie Eisenman had eight points, Hiscocks scored seven and Sydney Hudspeth had six for the Eagles, who had 10 different players score in the win.
