FOREST CITY | When Hunter Hagen completed the state wrestling tournament last February, he was able to do so with an eventual smile. Not because he had just taken runner-up at 195 pounds, but because of the journey that brought him to that moment. And what the future may hold.
The future is now for Hagen and the West Hancock wrestling team as Hagen comes into this season as a favorite to win a state title after becoming the school’s first state finalist in 16 years. Hagen finished 42-5 last season.
But it’s not all about Hagen in Britt. The Eagles return a solid core of young wrestlers who found success last season.
Bennett Bruns finished with a 32-15 record while Tate Hagen added a 35-15 record of his own. Bruns is a junior and Hagen a sophomore. Junior Caleb Eckles is also back after compiling a 20-10 record, and Chandler Redenius is hoping to build off a solid freshman campaign which saw him finish 26-12.
Some others to keep an eye on are Nathan Cabrera, Dalton Subject, and Cameron Clark.
