Old Bank Building

An employee of Ken Kaiser Restoration of Des Moines repairs the exterior of the old bank building on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Britt. The exterior work began in mid-September. The restoration of the building on Main Avenue is being led by the BRITT Group.

Donations to help save the old bank can be sent to The BRITT Group, P.O. Box 93, Britt, IA 50423, or can be given to Jim Nelson, Laurie Eden, Carolyn Dekruif, Gary Gelner, Jeff Kudu, Connecticut Shorty, Garry Kerns, Skip Miller or Allen Eden. All donations are tax deductible.

BRITT | As with any old building restoration project, The BRITT Group confronted a number of problems during 2017 and met all of them successfully.

Committee members have worked diligently during the past year and were successful in raising over $30,000 to have permanent repairs made to the exterior west and north walls of the neoclassical 1916 bank building.

During 2018, the BRITT Group will continue their fundraising efforts to raise the over $35,000 that is needed to make repairs to the east and south exterior walls. One of their fundraisers for 2018 will be a huge yard sale that will be held on Saturday, July 21. Save this date, and watch for more information later in the year.

The repairs to the east and south walls will exclude replacing the windows. Currently research is being done to determine the cost and best design for replacement windows. The repairs will also exclude the front entrance, as this will require a new design to compliment such a majestic building.

The BRITT Group is constantly developing and rethinking plans for repurposing the old bank for a bed & breakfast/hotel.

Several design students at Iowa State University have expressed an interest in helping to suggest a possible design for the interior layout.

The BRITT Group will work with the students during their spring semester and see what new interior design(s) they create that may be feasible to use.

Committee members expressed a sincere “thank you” to everyone who has generously donated to help save the old bank building.

We need your continued support to succeed in saving the most distinctive building on our Main Ave., and in turn help improve the economy of Britt and the local businesses,” Connecticut Shorty said. “Preservation of historic buildings has proven to be a very important economic development tool.”
