To the editor:

Dear North Central Iowa Community Member,

What if you didn’t know where your next meal was going to come from?

During the holiday season, many of us have the privilege of celebrating with the people who are most important in our lives, and we often do so with gifts and significant quantities of food.

I would like you to consider your neighbors who are unable to hold or take part in a similar celebration.

At United Way of North Central Iowa, we are working to alleviate food insecurity in Hancock County—in part with our new Backpack Buddies program at Corwith-Wesley Schools

This program discreetly delivers a kid-friendly sack of food to a child in need, to help supplement the student’s food supply over the weekend.

Too many children in our communities leave school on Friday, after the nourishment of school lunch all week, and may not receive another nutritious meal until Monday at school.

For many students, the consistent presence of school lunch is essential for their success in school and their basic health once the last bell rings. This program eases the burden of hunger for a child over the weekend and helps him prepare for school on Monday so he is ready to learn and not thinking about his empty stomach.

At United Way, we are proud of the impact of every donor dollar. Not only can you decide which community or school district you would like your Backpack Buddies donation to impact, but for only $155 a year, or simply $3 a week, you can sponsor a child for the entire school year.

If you would like to donate your time to this cause, follow us on Facebook or join our mailing list to learn about our next Community Packing Event in February. You can also donate food items to help supplement the sacks prepared by United Way of North Central Iowa and our volunteers. Visit our website at

www.unitedwaynci.org , or call us at 641-423-1774 to partner with us in this important cause.

For some students right here where you live and work, hunger is a barrier to their success. You can feed a child and change a life with your donation to United Way of North Central Iowa. If you would like to make a donation, please contact the United Way at 641-423-1774.

Sincerely,                                                                                             Cheryl A Kurtzleben                                                                              Vice President and Senior Residential Real Estate Officer, Manufacturers Bank and Trust                                                                                   United Way of North Central Iowa Board of Directors
