There has been some recent criticism that the Britt City Council wasn’t transparent enough when it revamped its golf cart ordinance. That criticism is not accurate.
The council discussed the possible changes at several council meetings. Those meeting agendas included golf cart ordinance discussion. The agendas are posted at city hall and on the city’s website.
The council did discuss the issue in open meetings. Some members of the public did attend at least one council meeting to discuss the ordinance with the council. The council did not place the golf cart ordinance on only one meeting agenda and then approve changes at that same meeting.
It followed laws and rules for posting agendas, receive input from the public, had discussion during open meetings and followed rules on readings of any amendments to ordinances.
The discussions on the ordinances during council meetings was often candid so that those listening could understand the complexity of the issue and each council member’s opinion.
If a council member had raised the issue and suggested an amendment which was immediately approved by the council after no discussion, that should make the public concerned about transparency. That didn’t happen with Britt’s golf cart ordinance.
