Calvin A. Hansmeier

CRYSTAL LAKE — Calvin A. Hansmeier, 92, of Crystal Lake, passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2016, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Forest City.

Funeral services for Calvin Hansmeier were at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov.17, at Crystal Lake United Methodist Church, 215 S. Summit Ave. in Crystal Lake, with Pastor Les Green officiating. Burial took place at Crystal Township Cemetery.

Visitation was 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W. in Britt, and continued one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.

Calvin August Hansmeier, the son of Edward and Luella (Bratt) Hansmeier, was born Dec. 26, 1923, at Britt. He was raised in the Crystal Lake area and at a young age went to make his home with Earl and Alvina Hobbs. He graduated from Crystal Lake High School in 1942.

In April of 1944 he entered the U.S. Army and served during WWII in Europe. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Calvin was united in marriage to Geraldine Gahan on Jan. 20, 1950, at the Methodist Church in Garner. They moved to Grandpa (August) Hansmeier’s farm north of Crystal Lake. Calvin farmed the rest of his life, and lived on the farm after retiring.

Calvin enjoyed playing cards with the card club for over 50 years. He enjoyed animals and farming, and the solitude of the farm and countryside. He also enjoyed the many cats we had on the farm, and even managed to have one in the house, even though Mom wasn’t that thrilled with it.

He also enjoyed his family and grandchildren. He always got a smile on his face watching great-grandchildren Cameron, and twins Jacob and Jackson.

Calvin is survived by his wife of 66 years, Geraldine, of Crystal Lake; two children: son Michael Hansmeier of Crystal Lake and daughter Joan Smith of Clear Lake; grandchildren: Richard (Kim) Smith and James Smith; great-grandchildren: Cameron, Jacob and Jackson Smith; sister-in-law Darlene Hansmeier of Corwith; step-brother Joe Dale Julian of Celebration, Florida; James Hobbs of Britt; Janice Doege of Woden, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Jessie Hansmeier, brother Donald Hansmeier, step-sister Nita Davis, a brother in infancy, one grandson and son-in-law Ronald Smith.

Calvin’s family would like to express a special thank-you to Kenneth and Carol Gremmer, Judy Loebig, and Becky Crone who helped with Calvin’s care at home before he went to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Forest City.

We would like to thank Steve and Nancy Helm, the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Forest City and Hospice for the care Calvin received during the final stages of life.
