BRITT | More than $5,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society during the Coaches vs. Cancer Night Jan. 26 at West Hancock High School.

The fundraising took place during the home varsity basketball games that evening, as well as the week leading up to it.

The total raised this year was $5,371.83

Fundraisers during the games included a silent auction and a bake sale.

Donation baskets were passed during the games for the “47 Second Drill." In Iowa, 47 people are diagnosed with cancer every day.

People also had the opportunity to pledge an amount of their choosing for each 3-point basket scored by the West Hancock boys and girls basketball teams on Jan. 26.

Cancer survivor Gary Gjerstad of Britt spoke to the crowd between the boys and girls games.

Lois DeLeon, one of the organizers of Coaches vs. Cancer at West Hancock, said Gjerstad's message was about staying positive.

When he spoke "the gym was so quiet I think you could have heard a pin drop," DeLeon said.
